Connecting parents with safe, local older people for childcare.
The childcare problem: Eight million UK families lack reliable wraparound childcare. Through a combination of desk research, interviews and our pilot, we know: One third of London schools don’t have an after-school club. There is a nationwide shortage in childminders (down 30% YoY) Student nannies don’t want long-term jobs Professional nannies require full-time employment. When school finishes, parents are still at work; they need to adjust hours or compromise with existing childcare solutions (the challenge of cost/quality/convenience).
The employment problem: There are at least 1 million people aged 50-64 who are ‘willing/want to work’ but are not currently in work (DWP). Ageism contributes to unemployment amongst women in their 50s and 60s and Covid-19 is compounding the issue.
Our matching platform and payroll service offers parents the reliable, long-term, local childcare they dream of by recruiting and training local older neighbours to provide part-time childcare. Providing parents with local, reliable childcare and older neighbours who are looking for rewarding, local employment.
The global childcare market is estimated to have been worth $339.1 billion in 2018, having grown at a CAGR of 8.3% since 2014 (Business Research Company). It is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.3% to nearly $520.4 billion by 2022. The UK childcare industry is worth an estimated £11B, driven by the female employment rate reaching a record high and a YoY increase in the number of primary school age children (ONS, DOE) but the market is constricted by a lack of skilled childcarers. In inner London it costs £4,420 per child per year for term-time after school pick ups by a Childminder. This could reach £5,700/year including holiday cover (CC&T). There are 1.2m families in London with dependent children and this has increased 9.5% over the 5 years to 2019 (DOE, 2019).
